ASSAFA’ – Images that Stir!” reaches its second edition, as part of an ongoing project and journey centered on the culture of the image and its related disciplines — illustration, graphic design, photography, and printmaking techniques. The theme of the illustration competition announced for this second edition was water. The subject I chose to explore was the rowers.

Images, that Stir!

Assafà, from the Neapolitan Assa' fa', is a dialect expression of liberation, mainly used in the meaning of “let it be done,” “finally.” From the desire to contribute, in Salerno, to the strengthening of a supply chain of illustration and graphic design. The theme of the 2025 second edition explored the concept of water. Among the symbols selected to represent it was rowing, a sport deeply connected to the city of Salerno and its enduring relationship with the sea.

At the beginning of the 20th century, interest in rowing began to grow in Salerno. A group of young locals stood out for their commitment to promoting this sport, turning what had once been simple boat outings into a true competitive activity. The introduction of this new discipline helped shape the city’s identity, forging an enduring bond with the sea. Rowing remains to this day a tradition that continues to define Salerno’s sporting culture.

Illustrations on display at the Monumental Complex of St. Sophia, Salerno.
