An intervention aimed at reconnecting together two previously separate residential units, through bespoke joinery and tailored spatial customization.

A clear reference to Japanese aesthetics served as the fil rouge, binding the spaces together and unifying what were once two separate environments.

The aim of the project was to harmonize the spaces of two residential units that were originally independent and autonomous. The layout was conceived to separate the living and sleeping areas, creating a circular circulation corridor connecting the two zones and using the residual windowless space to accommodate service areas and vertical connections.

The presence of an upper level required the integration of a vertical connection that would not compromise or reduce the usable space of the remaining rooms.

A bespoke joinery wall was therefore designed to incorporate traditional sliding Shoji doors, as well as dedicated spaces for bookshelves and vertical connections.
The connecting staircase was integrated into the wall alongside the bookshelf and can be screened by the Shoji doors or, alternatively, left exposed and also used as seating.

The project did not involve all spaces: the kitchen, the adjacent bathroom, and the two bedrooms were retained in their original positions, without being directly affected by the spatial redesign, and were instead integrated into the new functional layout.

The theme of Japan characterised the entire project, with the addition of references to Scandinavian style.

The lighting design was conceived to enhance the spaces characterized by a pitched wooden roof, without competing with it, instead emphasizing its height and geometry and lending distinction to a unified interior environment.
The doors allow light to filter through while screening the two areas. The selected materials ensure excellent acoustic insulation, allowing the functions of the living area to coexist harmoniously with the privacy and retreat of the sleeping area.

The second bathroom has undergone partial renovation.

It was decided to integrate the existing cladding with new ceramic cladding decorated with a detail from Van Gogh's “Plum Blossoms”, which refers to Eastern culture.

The sleeping area also features custom-made woodwork, with the creation of a wardrobe area screened off by sliding Shoji doors reminiscent of those in the living area.

The door panels have been embellished with paper imported directly from Japan.

The wall has been integrated with a headboard in which niches have been created to be used as bedside tables on both sides.

The texture of the paper allowed for the creation of beautiful light and shadow effects.

During the day, light from the skylights in the pitched roof pours in from above, providing a well-lit wardrobe space with soft, relaxing lighting.

At night, if left on, the lights in the wardrobe filter into the bedroom, creating a unique lighting effect.

The environment is bright during the day.

And evocative and poetic at night.
